Editorial

The first issue of “Quart” in 2020 is dedicated to architecture and is a continuation of the strategy assuming that subsequent editions of our quarterly will also be thematically profiled, in accordance with the recommendations of the moderators of the lists setting out currently the point hierarchy of scientific journals. However, in order to preserve the existing character and diversity of the texts presented, we allowed ourselves a rather large thematic range of articles selected for printing – from the story of the competition for the design of the Breslau “New Exchange” building, in which problems not only of architecture in the second half of the 19th century are revealed, but also the social and political dilemmas associated with it (Agnieszka Zablocka-Kos), through the relocations of Upper Silesian wooden churches in the German Empire (Jerzy Gorzelik), to the attempts of Jelenia Góra craftsmen to create a model Karkonosze House presented at the Lower Silesian Craft and Industry Exhibition in Görlitz (today Zgorzelec) in 1905 (Marta Ostrowska-Bies).
Further circles of initiation into the world of architecture lead us through Cairo to Paris and Weimar (texts by Katarzyna Wiącek, Cezary Wąs and Beata Ludwiczak), and the whole ends with a discussion of the exhibition of Russian art in the Vatican Museums (Darya Pyshynskaya) and my memory of our colleague and friend, Dr. Andrzej Jarosz, who passed away last December.
Therefore, it remains for me to invite you to read and remind that architecture can talk about what surrounds us no worse than literature, music or painting. All we have to do is learn to listen to it, and then it will speak to us in a full and clear voice.
