The latest issue of our quarterly demonstrates that the diversity of art can also be accompanied by its very diverse and creative interpretations. Epochs of the past can be combined in them with our present, and the tradition of art history with attempts to renew its research methods. Texts such as the article by Rafał Eysymontt devoted to medieval tower houses, or Radosław Gliński’s discussion on architectural porticoes, a permanent feature of urban constructions in that period, introduce us to the world of former architecture, urban planning and the accompanying realities of social life spread throughout Europe, as far as the lands of Silesia. The same is true of the juxtaposition of seemingly distant works in time and space analysed by Romuald Kaczmarek and Jerzy K. Kos, where interesting objects from different eras – Silesian tombstones from the 13th and 14th c. as well as the Hoym Family Mausoleum in Brzeg Dolny, the last surviving work by Friedrich Gilly – give the authors an occasion to reflect not only on the history of these objects, but also on the destructive influence of time, which erases the traces of human activity and causes their material and ideological deterioration. This destruction can sometimes be the result of political circumstances, but it can also happen that the power of politics, entering the arena of art, creates works of art that serve immediate propaganda purposes. Such was the case of St. Barbara’s Church in Bytom, the history of which is described in an article by Aleksandra Podlejska. And in an attempt to refer, at least in part, to the main theme of the previous issue of the “Quart”, which was interwar art, we publish Piotr Kulak’s text on Nela Samotyhowa’s art criticism, practised by her mainly in the “Kobieta Współczesna” (Contemporary Woman) weekly. In contrast, we are introduced into the wonderful and disturbing realm of 20th c. psychedelic art by a commentary on Wes Wilson and Chet Helms’ poster advertising rock concerts held in San Francisco in 1966 (Justyna Chojnacka). The issue is complemented by a review of Filip Lipińsk’s book Ameryka (America) (Ewa Wylężek-Targosz), a text in which the historical-geographical area, extending beyond the sole territory of the US states, becomes the subject of in-depth reflection on the almost mythical impact of American civilisation on the entire contemporary world.

What remains for me at this point is to wish you a careful reading of the texts we present – with the thought in mind that art itself is more valuable not only than gold, but also current politics, and therefore it is worth examining both its scientific and emotional aspects.
