Editorial

The last issue of “Quart” this year is devoted to various fields of art present in Wrocław in the Middle Ages. In doing so, we refer to other thematic issues of our quarterly in which Wrocław also made a special appearance as a place and an arena for artistic activities. I would like to mention, for example, issue 4(62)/2021 on contemporary art in Wrocław or the more recent issue 3(65)/2022, which discussed Wrocław’s industrial architecture.
If you read Jakub Adamski’s article, you will learn about the “architectural avant-garde around 1300” and the role played by the capital of Lower Silesia in assimilating and propagating the latest stylistic patterns of the time, not only in this domain of art. An extraordinarily detailed discussion, based on all currently available sources, on the decoration, furnishings and functions of the convent church of the Dominican Sisters of Wrocław is the result of Agnieszka Patała’s in-depth research. In turn, Aleksandra Sieczkowska’s commentary on the Annunciation with the Unicorn Polyptych from St. Elizabeth’s Church in Wrocław is conducive to further discussion of this outstanding work, now in the National Museum in Warsaw. The entire volume is rounded off by Dobrosława Horzela’s text, which presents – on the example of craftsmen working on the glazing at the Dominican church and monastery in Wrocław – the methods used by window glazing workshops in the 15th and 16th c.
It therefore remains for me to wish interesting reading, not only to those with a passion for medieval studies, and finally to make a few remarks pro domo sua. The 70th issue of the “Quart” closes a certain publishing cycle which I – as the conceptual creator of the magazine and its editor-in-chief – have patronised since 2006. We have experienced many ups and downs during this time, both financially and in terms of content, but the current level of our quarterly is the fruit of the work and commitment of many people. Among them, I would like to mention the late Dr. Andrzej Jarosz, the much-lamented and long-standing editorial secretary, Wojciech Głogowski, whose invention and talent contributed to the graphic design of the whole, Prof. Cezary Wąs, who supported me as
a great editor and friend throughout the years, Dr. Sylwia Świsłocka-Karwot, Dr. Jakub Zarzycki, Dr. Dorota Ucherek, Dr. Anita Wincencjusz-Patyna, Dr. Tomasz Bauer and – last but not least – Mr. Sławomir Kępa, and the Jaks printing house, where “Quart” has received its material form from the beginning of its existence until today.
With writing this editorial I am concluding my work as editor-in-chief and I hope that in the changed administrative context the quarterly will continue to be published under the guidance of a new – I hope: rejuvenated – Editorial Board. At this point, I would also like to thank Professor Romuald Kaczmarek, the issue’s thematic editor, for his commitment and effort, without which the “medieval-Wrocław” “Quart” would not have assumed such a grand Polish-English form. I would also like to express my thanks to the Department of Culture of the Wrocław City Office, whose financial support significantly contributed to the publication of this issue.
