The first of this year’s issues of our quarterly opens with an article by Małgorzata Popiołek-Roßkamp, whose author analyses the currently popular, both in the media and in scientific debates, theme of the so-called crisis of humanities, perceived by researchers of the contemporary world – technicised and indifferent to this sphere of human existence. The next text is a discussion of the story of the title of one of Jacek Malczewski’s most famous paintings – the so-called Melancholy (Paulina Łuczak). Krzysztof Siatka joins the circle of recently popular studies on the content of periodicals devoted to art, analysing the socio-political biweekly “Student”, published in Krakow in 1969–1981. Historians of architecture and urban planning will be, I believe, intrigued by Cezary Wąs’s extensive text devoted to the contribution of Polish architects to the Athens Charter, adopted in 1933, which after 1945 became an important programme for the reconstruction of cities destroyed during the war, the expansion of existing ones and the construction of new ones. For enthusiasts of architecture and its richly illustrated publications, I recommend Martine Hamilton Knight’s article discussing the monumental series of publications under the common title of “Buildings of England”, initiated by Nikolaus Pevsner. To recall the previous issue of “Quart” and return to Wrocław themes, we include two texts: on murals present in the space of our city (Barbara Salij-Hofman) and on the paintings of Łukasz Huculak, an artist affiliated with the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław (Marta Nokielska). The whole is complemented by reviews of a three-volume publication dedicated to Polish theatrical and social scenography of the 20th and 21st (Patrycja Cembrzyńska) and an exhibition of works by Krzysztof Jung, who died in 1998, at the Gunia Nowik Gallery in Warsaw (Grzegorz Piotrowski).

We know that the Muses become silent during the war, but regardless of the current situation in Europe, it remains for me to wish you an intellectually satisfying reading of the studies we present, and for myself and all of us to return to normality and to forget the curse of long ago: “May you live in interesting times”.
