Issue 2(64)/2022
Editorial
An “antique” issue of our quarterly reminds us of the origins of the history of art, when “art of the ancient” was the determinant of true art, combining aesthetic ideals with a return to the source that was always considered to be Nature. The texts presented in the latest “Quart” are to a large extent a confirmation of these theses, especially as they concern such important problems as the presence of classical architectural elements in modern painting (Constanza Broli) or the changes taking place in the reception of antiquity in the second half of the 18th c. (Agnieszka Gralińska-Toborek). An article on the iconography of the famous Lesbia (Roksana Maria Łajkosz) introduces us into the world of the relationship between ancient poetry and visual arts that are closer to us in time, as does a cross-sectional study by Aleksandra Giełdoń-Paszek on the visual reception of Ovid’s famous Metamorphoses from the Middle Ages to the present. The impact of archaeological discoveries on the art market and the inclusion of many artefacts in collections created in the 19th c. is the subject of Dorota Gorzelany-Nowak’s article, while the currently much-needed and postulated improvement of corrupt customs will probably be served by a text analysing the ancient and Christian sources of the virtue of Gratitude, inextricably linked to charity (Alicja Saar-Kozłowska).
The whole issue is complemented by a reflection on the “memory of the Middle Ages” combined with elements of the Renaissance in the church architecture created in Poland in the 16th and early 17th c. (Witold Miedziak), a paper on an attempt to include the St. Nicholas Church in Zamość in the narrative of the eternal territorial and ideological community of the Chełm Land with Russia (Paulina Korneluk), and a moving article on the fact that we have forgotten that the former Rzeczpospolita was a land of many cultures and religions, as evidenced by the history of the New Synagogue in Częstochowa (Wiktoria Morawska).
I hope that the “antique” and fully English-language issue of our quarterly will bring you genuine reading satisfaction. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our thematic editor, Dr. Agata Kubala. It is thanks to her extensive knowledge and practical efforts that it has been possible to acquire a number of interesting authors and a set of texts which might be interesting not only to art historians. For my part, I would like to conclude by expressing my Gratitude to the entire editorial team of “Quart”, all the more so as this virtue, related to the virtue of Justice, means nobly supporting one’s fellow human beings without expecting earthly rewards.
On behalf of the Editorial Board
