After the delights and surprises evoked by deskilling in modern art, we return in the latest issue of our quarterly to the calm waters of traditional art history, for which urban planning is one of the most important research branches. Reflection on the space we live in and related research takes us through past history yet is highly contemporary and relevant to the present.

For this reason, we would like to present you texts referring to the history of both the medieval urban centres on the Pilgrims’ Way to Santiago de Compostela (Natalia Bursiewicz) and the extremely interesting spatial development of the city and port of Bordeaux (Sandrine Lavaud). The geographical area covered by the authors is quite extensive and ranges from Tarnów, through Krosno to Truskawiec (Bogusław Krasnowolski, Zygmunt Łuniewicz and Damian Zając). The famous General National Exhibition in Lviv in 1894 was the subject of Roksolyana Holovata’s reflections, and that of Dorota Molińska regarded the urban layout in Żabikowo near Poznań created in the first half of the 20th century. The whole is completed by Elżbieta Kocowska-Siekierka’s article dedicated to the relatively little known in our country legal protection of Czech urban monument reservations, and texts discussing Kamil Śmiechowski’s book Kwestie miejskie. Dyskusja o problemach i przyszłości miast w Królestwie Polskim 1905‒1915 (Urban Issues. Discussion on the problems and future of cities in the Kingdom of Poland 1905–1915) (Aleksander Łupienko) and an international conference on ancient collections (Vinnie Nørskov).

At this point I would like to thank the thematic editor of this volume, Professor Rafał Eysymontt, without whose ideas, commitment and work the “urbanist” Quart would not have been possible.

Therefore, it remains for me, as always, to invite you to read and, if possible, to visit on your summer itineraries and pious pilgrimages any of the places we have discussed, with “Quart” in your hand luggage and faith in the importance of urban studies in your mind and heart.
