Editorial

We would like to dedicate the last issue of “Quart” this year to Dr. Andrzej Jarosz, who passed away in December 2019. Hence a slightly different character of the published texts, in which we tried to show indirectly Dr. Jarosz’s academic interests, which included various types of art and research disciplines. Justyna Bajda, writing about Julien Gracq’s poetic prose, approaches in her text the problems of the relationship between word and image that fascinated him. Michał Haake, in turn, raises the very important problem of artistic and methodological relations emerging at the meeting point of two main trends in painting – figurativism and abstraction. For Waldemar Okoń, The Album of Polish Painting, published in 1913, was a pretext to reflect on the language of artistic criticism of the end of the Belle Époque, and for Filip Pręgowski the analysis of the Jack Goldstein’s legacy was a departure point for the discussion on the “disappearance” of the creative subject in the 20th century art. In order to broaden the thematic range, we present also a text on women’s art created in the very oppressive for them reality of today’s Mexico (Karolina Rojek). Sylwia Świsłocka-Karwot, on the other hand, introduces us to the world of the concepts of an open work that were fashionable in their time. Andrzej Jarosz was also interested in numerous affiliations and variations of avant-garde cinema, hence the article about the work of David Lynch (Zuzanna Wagner) and, to complete the collection of various media and types of art, the text by Cezary Wąs about an interesting “monumental park” in Komorowice in Lower Silesia, a work by Tomasz Domański. In reviews and notes – reviews of the film Ida by Paweł Pawlikowski (Wacław M. Osadnik) and a book on urban planning in selected Eastern European countries occupied by the Third Reich (Hanna Grzeszczuk-Brendel), as well as a text by Bożena Steinborn about the director of the Schlesisches Museum der bildenden Künste in Wrocław – Dr. Cornelius Müller-Hofstede.

We hope that the latest “Quart” will keep in your memory the personality and achievements of Dr. Andrzej Jarosz, whose death meant that we lost not only an outstanding expert in 20th century painting and our long-standing editorial collaborator, but also a colleague and a wonderful friend. We will try to never forget him, because memory is also an art, and it is perhaps the most enduring art of all available to us.

I would also like to thank Professor Justyna Bajda, the thematic editor of the issue, for her valuable systematic comments and fruitful cooperation.

On behalf of the Editorial Board
Prof. Dr. habil. Waldemar Okoń
